Sedation Dentistry: How Can I Get Over My Fear of Going to the Dentist? It has been estimated that at least 1 in 5 Americans allow their fear of the dentist to prevent them from having regular checkups with their dentist. Also, although most Americans despite their fears are going ahead and seeking out dental care it’s estimated that the number of adults that are reluctant to visit the dentist is about every 3 out of 4. Sedation dentistry is one way to combat this fear of the dentist issue.

Mild Sedation Mild sedation is one option for anyone who is suffering from anxiety and stress that is brought on by a fear of going to the dentist. A common misconception is that all forms of sedation involve putting you to sleep. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth especially when it comes to mild forms of sedation. The main goal of sedation dentistry is to try and make the patient feel more relaxed in order to lessen or decrease the amount of discomfort they feel as opposed to completely putting them to sleep.

Moderate Sedation Moderate Sedation is good for any patient who suffers from a fear of the dentist that extends beyond the fear of mild discomfort. In this case your dentist may use moderate sedation in the form of nitrous oxide commonly referred to as “laughing gas” or IV sedation. IV sedation is administered intermittently through your veins. This type of sedation makes you sleepy, but the main goal is to keep you calm and suppress your consciousness. While you are still awake your response or reactions will be slowed down.

After Sedation Wears Off It should be noted that sedation is not permanent and at some point, it does start to wear off. Once the sedation starts to wear off this is around the time that your dentist will let you know the procedure has been successfully completed. At this point you will see that the procedure did not give you discomfort.
